                                                                                                                                        As befits an auction house specializing in historical rarities, we do not only look back
                                                                                                                                              at two spectacularly eventful decades on the occasion of this anniversary.
                                                                                                                                       Instead, we move farther back and delve into to the beginnings of modern photography.
                                                                                                                                         Its foundation was laid by the batch production of the world’s first successful 35 mm
                                                                                                                                            camera, available from 1926 under the name Leitz Camera, or Leica, for short.
                                                                                                                                           It is our pleasure to feature what is probably the most famous prototype of this
                                                                                                                                           groundbreaking camera generation in the upcoming 40  edition of our auction:
                                                                                                                                             The 0-series No. 105, the personal camera of Leica’s inventor Oskar Barnack.

                                                                                                                                         In the 1930’s and ’40s, Barnack’s 35 mm format became the new standard in photo-
                                                                                                                                           graphy, eventually transforming it into a diverse, easily accessible documentary
                                                                                                                                         tool. The new type of camera enabled professionals and an ever-growing number of
                                                                                                                                             skilled amateurs to tell their stories in pictures, both in the personal and the
                                                                                                                                          public spheres of life. To experience the touch and feel of a historical camera is to
                                                                                                                                          immerse oneself in the stories it captured and the narratives it created. That is the
                                                                                                                                                  magic that Leitz Photographica Auction is passionately devoted to.
                                                                                                                                          Launched in 2002, our auctions quickly became an international hub for collectors
                                                                                                                                            and lovers of vintage cameras. Twice a year, photography enthusiasts from all
                                                                                                                                         over the world follow our call. Backed by the expertise and unique archive of Leica
                                                                                                                                                 Camera AG, Leitz Photgraphica Auction documents trends and price
                                                                                                                                            increases in the continuously expanding market for historical cameras. Vintage
                                                                                                                                                  photography inspires more than ever. The magic is spreading fast.

                                                                                                                                       Accordingly, tremendous effort goes into our auctions. Months of preparation and hard
                                                                                                                                           work culminate in two events each year. The 40  edition of Leitz Photographica
                                                                                                                                      Auction would not have been possible without the tireless commitment of our team and
                                                                                                                                          the support of Leica Camera AG. A heartfelt “thank you” is due to everyone who
                                                                                                                                         made this anniversary possible — and to all camera enthusiasts who are celebrating
