The 1966 Noctilux 1.2/50 mm was the first 50 mm lens in the world containing an aspheric element. Leitz Wetzlar optical designers Helmut Frank and Dr. Paul Sindel were responsible for optical computation. The lens was introduced in 1966 and was received by the market as a sensation. It is almost entirely free of spherical aberration and coma while producing an exceptionally high contrast. Forty-five years ago, however, even for Leitz, it was quite a challenge to create such a lens, a fact reflected in its price: the lens was almost twice as expensive as the body of a Leica M4. It was replaced by the 50 mm Noctilux f/1 in 1976, which %u2014 using optical glasses newat that time %u2014 could be calculated without aspherical elementsand was even cheaper than its predecessor. In ten years of its production, only about 2,500 units of the 50 mm Noctilux f/1.2 were produced in total, representing one unit per business day. The Noctilux f/1.2 lens can truly be called a legend in the technical development of the Leica lenses. It is sought-after by collectors and still a favourite of some photographers. The offered example is in very good condition, with normal signs of use on the barrels, very good optics only showing a couple of hair thin cleaning marks, with both caps, delivered%u00a0on 01.11.1966.175 Noctilux 1.2/50 mm ASPH. %u20ac30.000*11702 Edition silver chrome no.035/100, 2021, condition A %u20ac 60.000 %u2013 70.000The Noctilux 1.2/50 mm was one of the first serially produced Leica lenses to feature a black finish. During the transition phase of moving from silver to black-paint lenses, Leica made a very small number of Noctilux 1.2/50 mm prototypes with a silver finish. Today, they count among the most coveted and highly-priced M lenses that there are. As a homage to the ultra-rare Noctilux in silver, Leica released a special edition of the Noctilux-M 1.2/50 mm ASPH. with a silver chrome finish. Its packaging has been designed to emulate the original box of 1966. The lens barrel is made of brass rather than aluminium. Instead of the customary Leica engraving, the front ring is marked with the letters LEITZ WETZLAR %u2014 just like the original Noctilux Noctilux%u00a01.2/50 mm. Only 100 units of this special-edition model were available worldwide. The offered example bears the serial number 4785202, special edition number 035/100 and is in perfect, unused condition.176 Noctilux-M 1/50 mm 11821 %u20ac3.000*E58 First Batch no. 2749931, 1975, condition A/B %u20ac 6.000 %u2013 7.000Sought-after first version 1/50 mm Noctilux with E58 filter thread, early example from the first production batch, in excellent condition, very good optics, including a matching 12519 hood (cond.
